They were mean, vicious, savage, aggressive and cruel. They were out for blood and that they shed with no pity or remorse. They gave themselves no name but the people called them 'The Rectifiers'.
Wherever they operated, trails of blood and death were left behind. But the common people liked them. They only targetted the corrupt men in the society. Their targets were not restricted to a particular profession. Wherever there was corruption that threatened the people in the lower tier, The Rectifiers rectified.
No one knew who they were or their number. There were rumours about who they were and their number, but no one knew anything about them for sure. The police had tried to identify and stop them, but they couldn't.
The Rectifiers were not loud. They carried out their operations silently and with absolute precision. That shielded them from being predictable and possible apprehension. They were silent assassins.
Their operation was four years old. It started with the assassination of a wealthy business man. The businessman was assassinated in the hotel room where he lodged with his side chic. They were so quiet that even the side chic who was sleeping beside her sugar daddy didn't hear nor see anything.
When his body was discovered with a tiny metal string around his neck, there was a typed note detailing his crime beside him. The note detailed how the businessman ordered the assassination of his apprentice who witnessed his diabolic activities that took the life of his first wife. The said apprentice was poisoned in police detention after his boss accused him of stealing from him. It was a setup.
After the assassination of the businessman, The Rectifiers didn't strike again until four months later when they killed a well known politician in his home. Again, they left a note detailing how the politician raped a girl and later murdered her after she threatened to expose him.
Each of the notes they left beside their victims' corpses carried the exact dates and times of the events they accused their victims of. No one knew how they got their facts but they were all relatable to events that happened.
Two months later, they amputed the ring leader of a gang that specialized in kidnapping and selling children. In this case, they left evidences that made the police treat the amputee as the criminal instead of the victim.
With their continued rectification of the wrongs perpetuated against the weaker and the poorer people in the society, their popularity and endearment increased among the masses. But the police and the people who were afraid of being their victims were not happy.
The police, because they had to do their jobs as vigilantism is not allowed by the law. The other set, because they were afraid of being punished for their sins. Also, the power that ruled the state and its friends were not comfortable with the activities of The Rectifiers. They didn't know who will be their next victim.
But The Rectifiers were not ready to stop. They were determined to purge the society of corruption and create a neutral environment where everyone would be considered as human and given equal rights. This was evident because in all their operations, they never stole from their victims. They were only out for blood and vengeance.
Then, they targetted the assistant commissioner of police in the state. That was their hardest task thus far. The assistant commissioner became their target when they discovered that he was in the business of selling human body parts to people who needed them for various ritual purposes. They had evidences that the assistant commissioner and his loyal men abducted people in the guise of making police arrests but would never take them to any police station.
Instead, they were taken to a slaughter house where their organs and body parts were harvested for sale to the highest bidders. When The Rectifiers discovered this, they started making plans to assassinate the assistant commissioner and his lieutenants. But to hit harder and more gainfully, they decided to start with the assistant commissioner.
But that was not an easy task as the assistant commissioner was always heavily guarded by armed policemen both at home and anywhere else. After considering their options, they sent one of their female members to disguise as a journalist and assassinate the commissioner in his office.
It was a suicide mission but they were willing to do whatever it would take to rectify a problem. The female operative also knew what she was going into. She made a prior appointment with the office of the assistant commissioner as a journalist. On the day of the appointment, she had the opportunity to have a private session with the commissioner.
In the middle of the interactive session, the operative reached into her bag, brought out a pistol with a muffler fixed on its nozzle and shot the commissioner twice in the head. But before she could reach the exit door, armed policemen had surrounded the premises. Seeing that she had no means of escaping and to avoid being captured and interrogated, she shot herself in the head and died as well.
