Rylee lay sprawled across her bed, absentmindedly scrolling through her phone.

Her mind was racing, tangled between the overwhelming pressure of her family’s expectations and the secret, stolen moments she shared with Theo. A soft smile danced on her lips as she stared at his text.

“Can’t wait to see you tonight. Miss you. Xoxo ❤️”

The words made her heart race, a familiar warmth flooding through her veins. She quickly tapped out a response, her fingers flying over the screen, too quick for her mind to catch up.

“I miss you too. You mean everything to me. ❤️”

Without a second thought, she hit ‘send.’ The butterflies in her stomach fluttered, but before she could savor the feeling, her phone buzzed again.

Her eyes widened in horror as she glanced at the name at the top of the screen.

David.

No. No, no, no.

The text she’d just sent wasn’t meant for David, her oldest brother. It was meant for Theo. She quickly tapped the message open, but it was too late. It was already on its way, forever stored in her brother’s inbox.

Her stomach dropped.

Suddenly, the door to her room flew open with a deafening crash. David stormed in first, his large frame blocking the doorway, followed closely by her other brothers—Ethan, Lucas, and Zachary. They wore identical scowls of shock and anger. The room suddenly felt smaller, suffocating.

“Rylee!” David’s voice boomed, his eyes locked on the phone in his hand. “What the hell is this?”

Her heart slammed against her ribcage as he waved the phone in the air, showing her the love message she had so carelessly sent.
“This isn’t for you, David,” she stammered, her voice shaky with panic.
“It’s for Theo. I—I sent it to the wrong person.”

“You sent this to the wrong person?” David’s voice was low, dripping with disbelief and disappointment.
 “What are you, a child?”

Ethan stepped forward, his face pale. “You’re texting him? Theo, of all people? You know how we feel about him.”

Her other brothers stood silent, watching the scene unfold, their faces a mixture of confusion and judgment.

“I—I didn’t mean to!” Rylee stuttered, her hands trembling.
“It was a mistake. A mistake, okay?”

“You’ve been texting him for weeks, haven’t you?” Zachary demanded, crossing his arms over his chest.
“And you think we won’t find out?”

“No, I—I didn’t—” Rylee’s words caught in her throat as she looked at her brothers, desperate for understanding.

“What part of ‘no dating until you’re twenty-five’ don’t you understand?” David snarled.
“Theo’s nothing but trouble, Rylee. You know it. We know it. And yet you keep throwing yourself at him.”

“I’m not ‘throwing myself at him,’” Rylee shot back, anger flaring up from the pit of her stomach.
“He’s not a bad guy, and I’m not a little girl. I’m an adult, David. You don’t control me.”

David clenched his jaw, his eyes narrowing. “I’ll deal with Theo. You can count on that.”

“No,” Rylee shouted, her voice cracking with the force of her emotions.
“Don’t you dare. You don’t get to control who I talk to. I’m not a prisoner in this house!”

Lucas stepped forward, his voice softer but no less serious.

“Rylee, you don’t know what you’re getting yourself into. Theo’s not someone you can just have fun with. He’s dangerous.”

“Oh, give it a rest,” she spat, standing up from her bed, fists clenched at her sides.

“You all treat me like a damn child, like I don’t know what I’m doing. I’m not you, and I’m not going to sit around waiting for some perfect guy to come and fix my life. You think I don’t see the way you all treat me? Like I’m a burden?”

The anger that had been simmering beneath the surface for so long finally erupted, and she felt a wave of emotion sweep over her. Her brothers’ protective nature, while well-meaning, felt suffocating, like a cage she couldn’t escape.

Her mother’s voice echoed from the hallway. “What is all this noise?”

Victoria entered the room just as Rylee felt her frustration reaching its peak. Her mother’s gaze immediately flicked to David’s hand, holding the phone with the incriminating message. Her expression darkened.

“What’s going on?” Victoria demanded, her tone sharp with disapproval.

“Mom, tell them,” Rylee cried out, her voice thick with tears. “Tell them they can’t control me. I didn’t do anything wrong.”

“Rylee, you need to respect your brothers,” Victoria said, crossing her arms. “They only want what’s best for you. They’re just trying to protect you.”

“Protect me?” Rylee’s voice shook with frustration. “By treating me like I’m some fragile doll that needs to be kept in a box?”

Her mother stepped closer, her face softening for a brief moment. “It’s not about keeping you in a box. It’s about keeping you safe.”

“Safe?” Rylee laughed bitterly, tears now streaming down her face.
“From what? A text message? From Theo? I’m not a kid anymore, Mom. I don’t need your protection.”

“Rylee, please,” her mother pleaded. “This isn’t how you should be acting. You need to grow up and listen.”

“No,” Rylee snapped, her voice trembling with both anger and hurt. “I don’t need to listen to any of you. Not anymore. You’re all the same.”

With that, she stormed out of her room, pushing past her brothers and mother as they stood frozen in place.

The sound of her feet pounding against the wooden floor echoed in the silence. She slammed the door to her room behind her, locking it, and sank to the floor, tears falling freely as the weight of her family’s control pressed down on her.

Later That Night

The hours dragged by. Rylee lay on her bed, staring at the ceiling, her mind swirling with thoughts of Theo, her brothers, her mother.

The arguments had only gotten louder, and despite her tears, she couldn’t shake the feeling that something was missing—something beyond the love she had for Theo, something deeper.

She wasn’t going to live this way forever.

Her eyes flicked to the window. The moonlight spilled across the room, and a sense of rebellion began to grow inside her. She wasn’t going to stay trapped in this house any longer. She needed to see Theo. She had to.

Rylee stood, wiping the last of her tears away, and silently moved to her closet.

She grabbed a coat and slipped out of her room, making sure to avoid the creaky floorboards. She could hear the muffled voices of her brothers and mother downstairs, their argument still raging. It was now or never.

Heart pounding, she crept down the stairs, praying she wouldn’t get caught. She could almost feel the cold air from outside, the freedom waiting for her. As she reached for the door, her phone buzzed once more.

“Rylee, where are you?”

It was Theo.

Before she could respond, the sound of a car engine outside made her freeze. Her breath caught in her throat.

A shadow passed by the window.

She peeked outside, her pulse quickening.

There, parked in the driveway, was Theo’s car.

But she wasn’t alone……..
